Why doesn’t ChatGPT recommend my restaurant? Seven reasons

In short

Usually because the sources ChatGPT reads don’t clearly say your restaurant is the answer to the guest’s question. The seven most common reasons: your website doesn’t answer it, AI tools can’t reach your website, your details disagree across sources, you’re missing from the sources AI cites, a rival answers the question better, the guest asks in another language, or the answer simply changed that day.

1. Your website doesn’t answer the question

If a guest asks for a restaurant with a terrace, a tasting menu or a private room, and your website doesn’t say you have one, AI has no reason to name you. The most common causes are a menu published only as a PDF or an image, and pages with beautiful photographs but very little text.

The fix: say it, in words, on your own website. Give each thing guests ask about a page or a section of its own.

2. AI tools can’t reach your website

Some websites turn AI search crawlers away without their owners knowing: a line in robots.txt, or bot protection at the hosting company that treats crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT) or Claude-SearchBot as a threat. Websites that only show their text after scripts run can also look almost empty to some crawlers.

The fix: ask whoever manages your website to check robots.txt, the firewall and whether your pages show their text without scripts.

3. Your details disagree across sources

Different hours on Google and TheFork, an old address on Tripadvisor, a cuisine described one way on your website and another in a guide. When sources disagree, AI is less sure about you, and a rival whose details line up everywhere becomes the safer answer.

The fix: the same name, address, hours, cuisine, price range and booking link on your website and in every listing.

4. You’re missing from the sources AI cites

AI tools lean on guides, listings, reviews and press. For restaurants in Spain, that includes the Michelin Guide, Repsol, Guidavera, the guide for Spain, Google, TheFork, Tripadvisor and the food press. A restaurant that appears in none of the pages the AI reads for a question is unlikely to be named, however good it is.

The fix: complete every listing you can, and work towards mentions in the guides, local press and “best of” round-ups that cover places like yours.

5. A rival answers the question better

Often the restaurant AI recommends instead of you isn’t better; it’s better described. Its website has a page for the very occasion the guest asked about, its reviews mention the dish by name, and a local article put it on a list.

The fix: look at what the recommended restaurant’s sources say that yours don’t, and close that gap with what is true about you.

6. The guest asks in another language

A visitor from London or Berlin asks in English or German, and AI answers largely from sources in that language. If your website and listings only speak Spanish, you may be visible to local guests and invisible to visitors.

The fix: publish your main pages, and the answers to the questions visitors ask, in the languages your guests use.

7. The answer changed that day

AI answers vary from one moment to the next, even for the same question. Being named on Monday and not on Tuesday is normal. What matters is how often you’re named across many questions and many days.

The fix: don’t judge by a single answer. Track the same questions over weeks.

How to find out which reason applies

  1. Write down the questions guests ask that should lead to you.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude with web search switched on, and note who is named.
  3. Open the pages each answer cites, and compare what they say about your rivals with what your sources say about you.
  4. Check your website for the details guests ask about, and your robots.txt for blocked AI crawlers.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT recommend restaurants that aren’t as good as mine?
Because it recommends what its sources describe best, not what is best. If a rival’s website, listings and press answer the guest’s question more clearly, AI repeats them.
Is it harder for a new restaurant to be recommended by AI?
Usually, yes, because there are fewer sources about it. Complete listings, a clear website and a few early mentions in the press and guides help AI find and trust a new restaurant.
Do reviews affect what ChatGPT says about my restaurant?
Reviews are among the sources AI reads. What guests praise in them, a dish, the view, the service, is often what AI repeats when it describes you.
